CLEAN ELECTRIFICATION
Decades of recycling and composting programs have failed to bring meaningful change. Solstice Schools are dedicated to ending the fossil fuel era—and that begins at home, by heating our buildings, charging our vehicles, and powering our campuses with clean electrons, not dirty molecules.
By eliminating fossil fuels from their campuses, schools can save money, inspire students, cut carbon pollution, and improve air quality, both outdoors & indoors—which improves learning outcomes.
Clean Electrification in schools means installing solar wherever possible, sourcing clean electricity, and electrifying cooking, heating & cooling, and vehicle fleets.
These schools are meeting the challenge, and reaping the benefits:
Punahou School Solar Energy Array.
Punahou School’s solar energy array reflects a strong commitment to clean energy, climate leadership, and hands-on sustainability education. The array generates renewable electricity on campus, reducing reliance on fossil fuels while serving as a real-world learning tool for students across disciplines. As part of Punahou’s broader climate strategy, the solar array supports the goals outlined in the school’s Climate Action Report, highlighting how schools can integrate renewable energy into both operations and learning.

Grades 2-5 Kosasa Neighborhood, designed to achieve LEED for Schools Platinum Certification, achieves net-zero electricity use over the course of the year, producing as much energy on-site through solar PV as the occupants consume.
